Any Sherline milling machine can be ordered with digital readouts factory
installed. The installation includes special handwheels with built-in electronic
encoders that replace the standard handwheels. (The standard handwheels are not
included when the DRO option is ordered.) These special DRO handwheels are
connected to an electronic readout box that translates the handwheel movement
into a display of table travel for each of the three axes of movement. The
readout for any axis can be reset to zero at any time with the push of a button.
Spindle RPM is also constantly displayed on the box whenever the motor is
running. The readout can be fitted to either inch or metric machines. See the
drop-down menu below for part numbers for each machine.
Digital readouts have become increasingly popular in professional machine shops
in recent years because they make working with dimensions easier and help
eliminate mistakes in counting handwheel revolutions. The display shows the
position of each axis in relation to a zero point that you establish. Inch
versions show position to three and a half decimal places or to within .0005".
Metric versions show position to within .01 mm. Backlash can be electronically
eliminated by setting its measured value into the readout box for each axis.
When handwheel rotation changes direction, the backlash value is electronically
subtracted before the readout counts in the other direction.
The ease with which distance and direction can be kept track of with this system
will add a new level of enjoyment to your machining. It also helps eliminate
some of the tedious job of keeping track of handwheel revolutions and thereby
helps eliminate errors.
The deluxe 5400-series mill is the most popular mill. It comes equipped with all
of Sherline’s standard features upgraded to include a laser engraved 12" (305mm)
solid aluminum base for 2" or additional Y-axis travel, laser engraved scales on
the table and base, 2-1/2" (63mm) adjustable “zero” handwheel on the Z-axis and
2" (51mm) adjustable “zero” handwheels on the X- and Y-axes, a mill headstock
spacer (P/N 1297) to provide more throat distance and a 1/4" drill chuck and
drawbolt (P/N 3072).
All Sherline mills feature precision
machined dovetailed slides with adjustable gibs, permanently lubricated spindle
bearings, adjustable preload anti-backlash feed screws and a high-torque 90 VDC
motor with electronic speed control. Speed is continuously variable from 70 to
2800 RPM without gear or belt changes. A second pulley position is also
available to provide extra torque at low RPM if needed.
An additional $80 worth of accessories plus 2"
more Y-axis travel and the convenience of laser engraved reference scales make
the additional $100.00 over the cost of a basic Model 5000/5100 a very good buy.
OTHER OPTIONS: The 5400/5410 mill can be
ordered with P/N 8100 digital readout already installed. Standard handwheels are
not included because they are replaced by the DRO handwheels. The mill can also
be ordered in "CNC ready" configuration ready for the application of stepper
motors and CNC controls. In this configuration the standard handwheels are
supplied so that they can be used on the rear shaft of a dual shaft stepper
motor for optional manual control.
